Everything
that exists is a gateway to the divine.
Whether you see life as a dangerous place
full of dark corners, hard edges and harsh
lessons or whether you behold the Beloved
in everything that happens, depends on
how deeply you have dived into the nature
of your own being. The most mundane act
becomes a sacred experience when you hold
it tenderly in love and open deeply to
its truth in this moment.
Admittedly,
it’s easy to get caught in the spell
of separation whilst raising a family,
making money to make ends meet, pursuing
a career or campaigning for justice. The
trouble and strife of everyday life is
a great place to hide behind a mountain
of story-lines. In the midst of “I’m
doing the best for my children”
and “I have to take care of
my future” there’s no
time to look for God! Getting involved
in ordinary human living is traditionally
viewed as a distraction from the spiritual
path. But, whilst this may have been true
several hundred years ago, it is no longer
enough to retreat into a cave and contemplate
life from afar.
Denial
of earthly life simply widens the gap
between human experience and divine expression.
Only by embracing everything can the separation
be healed. You can awaken to Love even
through all the challenges, difficulties,
hurdles and heartbreaks of being human.
You can open to Truth even in the midst
of the busyness of human “comings
and goings”. God lives right
here and now, not “out there”
somewhere. And since you – like
me - probably find yourself in the midst
of the high-speed modern world, then this
is your doorway to God!
Only
by embracing fully both the pleasure and
the pain of being a 21st century human
can consciousness evolve to the next level.
In the Western world we have more material
comforts than we have ever known, more
opportunities to grow than in previous
generations and more freedom to explore
ourselves and the world around us. We
don’t need to deny ourselves the
privileges of modern life but neither
should we overlook the riches offered
by diving into the depths of our hearts.
The new consciousness is a meeting of
inner and outer worlds. It’s the
journey of going inside to find Love and
Truth as well as enjoying the fruits of
our material world. Having a deep passion
for life in all its manifestations whilst
being able to see beyond the surface reality
of the material means you can “be
in the world but not of it”.
When you can embrace both your human and
divine nature, then you can celebrate
your totality and say a big “Yes!”
to Life!
The
enlightened mystic and 21st century visionary,
Osho, had a great name for the new human
being that is evolving: Zorba the Buddha.
Zorba the Buddha is both passionate and
transcendent. He (or she) enjoys
earthly pleasures whilst not being attached
to them. He goes out into the world to
work, play and create as well as going
inside to develop spiritual awareness.
He is fully present in her body whilst
knowing that her true essence is Buddha-nature.
He lives consciously, awake in Love and
Truth in every aspect of life, from food
to sex, from work to money, from relationship
to environment. Becoming a Zorba the Buddha
means you are a fully integrated human
being who lives in harmony with the world
and sees God in everyone and everything.
When
each of us becomes a Zorba the Buddha,
the world will truly change. We will no
longer be spiritual seekers doing spiritual
things. Instead, the fragrance of our
true spiritual nature will permeate our
lives in every way. Whether we are washing
dishes, cooking a meal, playing with our
children or making love, every circumstance
can be a sacred moment. You do not have
to pray for Love, for when you have embraced
your true nature you realize that love
is who you are. And neither do you have
to search for Truth, for when you rest
deeply inside this moment, you see that
truth is all there is.
When
we fully embody the openness of our Love-nature
and the depth of our Truth-nature, we
will give birth to a new world in which
there is no separation between the material
and the spiritual and there is no conflict
between human and divine. In this new
world, Love will be expressed by caring
for ourselves, for each other and for
the planet that is our home. And Truth
will be the expression of our open hearts.
Each
and every one of us can realize our divine
nature and become a Zorba the Buddha right
here and NOW. This is the new path of
conscious living that has the power to
transform our inner and outer worlds.
To
live consciously is to be in right relationship
with every aspect of your life. We tend
to think that relationship is something
we have, something that we fit into our
lives in order to get security or love
or pleasure. But this is not true: Life
is relationship! We are actually in relationship
with Life all the time. We interact with
our friends, our families, our lovers
and everyone we meet whether it is in
the office, the supermarket or the bus.
We interact with our day-to-day work,
our creativity and our life’s purpose.
We interact with money, society and the
world. Every day we interact with our
food, our environment and all the resources
we make use of. In every moment we are
interacting with our bodies, our feelings
and our thoughts. There is not a single
thing that exists that we are not in relationship
with.
The
issues we have in a personal one-to-one
relationship are the same as the issues
we have in life. If we cannot surrender
to the process of relationship, then we
cannot surrender to the process of Life.
And vice versa. It doesn’t matter
what form our relationship or our life
takes. It doesn’t matter what the
details are, whether it is successful
or a failure, whether we are rich or we
are poor, or even whether we are happy
or sad. What does matter is how total
we are, whether we give ourselves up completely
to Life and trust it to carry us to wherever
we are meant to be going. Totality leads
to intimacy and intimacy leads to right
relationship.
The
question is not “how can I fit
relationship into my life?”
but “how can I get more intimate
with Life?” Intimacy with Life
means shedding our masks, dropping our
defenses, cutting through our story-lines.
It means baring that tender honest part
of ourselves that can just experience
the fullness of this moment. It means
becoming a lover of what is.
When
loving what is becomes more important
than self-preservation, then you can be
sure you are on the way to finding God.
