Amoda Maa Jeevan is an author and spiritual teacher. She has been listed as a “modern mystic” and “a living spiritual visionary”. Her mission is to bring the illumination of love to the darkness we perceive within ourselves and in the world.
Early Years
Amoda’s spiritual journey has involved a phoenix-like transformation out of the darkness of personal suffering. Born in 1962 into challenging circumstances, her childhood and adolescence has been a story of loss, shock and isolation. For a number of years she was classified as clinically depressed and later was mute for a period of time.
Her early adulthood was spent studying intensely for a Degree and then a Doctorate in Psychology at the University of London. Her cutting-edge research in the 1980’s on the psychological effects of aerobic exercise, the relationship between fitness and stress, and the “exercise high” has been published in scientific journals as well as featured in mainstream TV, newspapers and magazines in the UK.
A profound unity-consciousness experience in 1989 devastated Amoda’s personal and academic life and set her on the path of self-inquiry. During this “dark night of the soul”, she was penniless and homeless for a while. Without the usual attachments and identifications of modern-day life, she became a “nobody”. Fuelled by her own unexpected mystical and visionary experiences, the next few years were spent on a deep inner exploration which included meditation, primal therapy, rebirthing, metaphysics, psychedelics, and many other forms of psycho-spiritual methods.
Radical Awakening
Her search for happiness eventually led her to India and to the ashram of the revolutionary mystic, Osho. Although Osho had left his body just a few years earlier, she felt his presence very strongly and knew him to be her spiritual master. From this moment on, surrender became her spiritual path and life itself became her guru. Taking on her new name of Amoda Maa Jeevan (she was previously known as Maria Morris) - which means “living a joyous life” - she returned to the UK and went on to develop her own unique method of transformation using movement and breath, had her very first book published (Moving into Ecstasy, Thorsons, 2001) and became the founder of the School of Ecstatic Movement. Over the years, Amoda worked with hundreds of people through emotional & spiritual counselling to help them move forwards in their lives.
Throughout this time, despite her external success, Amoda was still searching for happiness and love, especially within intimate relationship. Catalyzed by a dramatic ending to her 10-year marriage in 2000, she re-experienced another “dark night of the soul”; but this time it was a deeply internal experience that took her to the core wound of separation. In 2002, the desire for freedom from suffering became greater than her desire for relationship, love or even happiness, and in the midst of her plea to a Higher Power to show her the way through, she received a vision. This vision radically changed her life and gave her the keys to the transformation of her own personal suffering as well as the keys to the transformation of humanity’s suffering. From that moment on, the spiritual search was over and all methods were dropped.
